SuMaArt, is unique, beautiful, decorative, durable and useful woodcarving art. Each items is skillfully cut out of one piece of wood.         This exotic art is memorable and tangible and can be used to send good wishes, to encourage, to express warm feelings, etc.                   SuMaArt, expresses emotions better than words can say and is therefore called  "art that speaks without talking" .

The primary characteristic of this art are the symbols with supporting meaning. This combination can only be found on the  art of the Maroons of Suriname. These symbols are not only unique but they stand for courage, boldness, strength, survival and perseverance.         They were created in a peaceful, harmonious environment, and tell the story about people that choose for freedom despite the unknown future.  These symbols are used to express emotions, describe personal relationships and social activities.They are expressions of the nature of men as spiritual beings.  The interior of Suriname can be seen as the main source for the establishment of most symbols. Some were influenced by images that the creators saw when the first start visiting the city but the interpretation always refered to the impression that the image had made on the creator.

The second characteristic is related to the Maroon culture where symbols are placed on items of everyday use, such as,
benches, paddles, combs, etc. This art is originated from the Maroons in Suriname but can also be found in the neighboring countries were
the Suriname Maroons moved to.
